FRANK HURLEY (1885-1962) Thirteen original display boards for Kodak's The Memorial Exhibition of the late Frank Hurley O.B.E. , [1961], each board (50 x 40.5cm.) with mounted gelatin silver print (various sizes), each with pasted-on label with explanatory text beneath; two-colour exhibition logo at foot 'With Shackleton to the Antarctic Photography by Captain Frank Hurley O.B.E.' A Kodak Presentation.' and pasted-on numbers. AN IMPORTANT SERIES BY PERHAPS THE GREATEST OF ALL ANTARCTIC PHOTOGRAPHERS, SIGNIFICANTLY DIFFERENT TO EARLIER IMAGES AND THUS REPRESENTING HURLEY'S FINAL PERSONAL VIEW OF SHACKLETON'S EPIC EXPEDITION. Kodak, realising the publicity value of Hurley's photographs (particularly those taken after the loss of the Endurance with a vest pocket Kodak), sponsored this exhibition in Sydney in 1962. Hurley had printed the photographs from his original negatives, the captions had been printed, a number of exhibition cards were ready and other preparations for the exhibition had reached an advanced stage when he died. It was decided that the exhibition should go ahead in Kodak House, Sydney, but under the more appropriate title of The Memorial Exhibition of the late Frank Hurley O.B.E. . As an early text card (present here only in facsimile) explains: The negatives of the pictures displayed here were made by ... Hurley ... 47 years ago. The prints were made recently by him for this exhibition. After the crushing of the "Endurance" the whole plate ... glass negatives and cine film, hermetically sealed in containers, became submerged beneath ten feet of mushy ice for a week in the hold of the wreck. At great hazard, Hurley rescued the containers by diving beneath the ice ... after the wreck, the story was continued with a Vest Pocket Kodak . Recently, a number of the display boards were used to illustrate South - The Story of Shackleton's Last Expedition (ed. King, London, 1991). [This selection comprises (with exhibit numbers given in brackets):] 1. (4) Portrait of Hurley standing with his cine-camera (image: 32.7 x 25.5cm.) 2. (6) Grytviken, South Georgia, "Endurance" moored in King Edward Cove (image: 25.5 x 33cm.) 3. (15) A view of a fragmentary iceberg from the fo'c'stle of the "Endurance" (image: 26.4 x 33.3cm.) 4. (28) "Endurance" held fast in the ice (image: 25.5 x 33.4cm.) 5. (34) Portrait of "Saint", one of Tom Crean's sled-dogs (image: 32.8 x 25.5cm.) 6. (38) Below decks on the ice-bound "Endurance" two members of the expedition carry out scientific work (image: 25.5 x 33.1cm.) 7. (50) A view from the middle of the camp on the ice, with in the middle distance, the stricken "Endurance" listing to starboard, her rigging beginning to collapse (image: 25.3 x 33.4cm.) 8. (52) The camp on the ice, 19 members of the expedition, including in the left fore-ground Frank Wild and Shackleton (image: 25.5 x 33.2cm.) 9. (53) Close-up view of the wreck of the "Endurance", Frank Wild stands left foreground (photograph of a photo-montage made up from two separate negatives (image: 25.5 x 33.2cm.) 10. (58) The expedition on an ice-floe, night-time, with the boats 'beached' and a fire blazing (photograph of a George Marston watercolour, image: 25.4 x 33.4cm.) 11. (59) Beaching one of the boats on Elephant Island (photograph of a photomantage, image: 25.3 x 33.1cm.) 12. (63) The 'hut' on Elephant Island: an expedition member stands in front of the shelter constructed from two upturned boats (image: 254 x 331mm.) 13. (68) Members of the expedition stand and watch as the trawler "Yelcho" steams into view (photograph of a photomontage using two negatives, image: 254 x 332mm.) (13)
