Mainly active in his hometown, he is also recorded as having worked in Leiden and alongside his father at the Danish court in Copenhagen. He specialised in painting trompe-l’œil still lifes, of which the present lot is a characteristic example. This elaborate composition depicts a wall cabinet overflowing with an array of objects, including pieces of writing equipment and gold coins, visible through half-open doors serving to create an illusion of depth. This effect is heightened by the masterful depiction of a piece of fabric hanging from one of the doors and covering part of the painted picture frame.
