N.B.Francesco Coleman was born in Rome in 1851. Like his father, English painter Charles Coleman and brother, Enrico, Francesco became a painter. He worked with both oils and watercolors. The subject of the work presented here probably depicts Queen Anne Boleyn before she was taken to the Tower Green to be executed on May 19, 1536. Anne Boleyn was the second wife of King Henry VIII and the catalyst for England's break with the Catholic Church due to its stance on divorce. The crest in the center of the piece includes the motto of England, "Dieu et mon Droit" meaning "God and my right".
