FRANCE-- A collection of forty documents signed by French noblemen and notables, 1260-1786, in French (three in Latin), in ink on vellum (three in print with manuscript insertions), sizes 330 x 670mm. and smaller (some stained and fading), tipped on guards on to the leaves of an album, 19th Century blind-stamped calf with Gothic panel and cornerpieces, four gilt fillets, spine gilt in compartments, gilt-stamped title, by Hering with his label. A collection illustrative of the power of the French aristocracy and notables, including a letter of protection signed by Raymond, Viscount of Turenne (1260), receipts signed by the Duke of Normandy (1356), Anne de Montmorency, Marshal of France (1531) and others, an account of the expenses of the stable of Henry IV ( King of France, 1589-1610) in May 1594, documents referring to the partitioning of land, warrants for the exercise of trade, and for appointments as treasurers, bailiffs and superintendents of estates, two for the Keeper of the Arsenal at Paris ( 1671 ), a licence to carry a pistol, also testimonies, certificates, two orders for levying taxes in Languedoc and others referring to ecclesiastical matters. The collection also includes LEOPOLD I ( Holy Roman Emperor , 1658-1705). Letter signed, a petition to the Pope concerning a canonisation, in Latin, Linz, 6 May 1684 ; Joseph II ( Holy Roman Emperor , 1765-1790. Two documents signed, for the appointment of canonesses to the Abbey of St Waudru at Mons, in Latin, Vienna, 5 February 1781 and 19 May 1786; and two papal documents.
