lot of 50+, includes 1.75" square piece of fabric, mounted on printed cardstock from the estate of Orville Wright and presented to William Lewis signed by Harold Miller and Ivonette Wright Miller, Co-Executor and niece of the Wright brothers. This card reads 1903 Wright "Kitty Hawk" Original Fabric Presented to William Lewis When Orville Wright prepared the Kitty Hawk machine for public exhibition, the original fabric had to be replaced, as it had been under water during the Dayton Flood of 1913. He substituted new fabric of identical material. After his death in 1948, we found that he had preserved some of the original coverings of the wings. We certify that this piece of fabric was used by Orville and Wilbur Wright on 17 December 1903 at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina in the world's first heavier-than-air flights in which man achieved free, controlled, powered, and sustained flight. The card is 7.25" x 10.4". Lot also includes a signed and typed letter of introduction from Orville Wright on his printed stationary, dated Dec. 15, 1937, to Mr. Earl C. Alley, Chief Civilian Personnel Branch, Wright Field, asking Earl to consider employing William Lewis who had worked for the Wrights as a janitor for about ten years. This letter includes Orville Wright's bold, black signature. Also includes a certificate of service to William Lewis from the U.S. Air Force for 31 years of faithful service at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, signed by Brig. Gen. C.O. Williams, Jr. (8.25" x 10.5"), AND an 8" x 10" silver gelatin photograph of Williams being presented and award for Superior Performance by an Air Force officer at Wright-Patterson. This lot also includes a large number of 8" x 10" silver gelatin portraits of Air Force officers, most autographed to Lewis, as well as several certificates and awards presented to Lewis by the U.S.A.F., many signed by Generals, dating from 1944-1963. NOTE:Additional images and documents relating to this lot are viewable at www.cowans.com. Condition: 1st, 2nd & 4th all EXC.; 3rd trimmed, else VG, all others VG+ to EXC..
