Paris: imprim par l'auteur, se vend chez Barbou, 1764-1766. 2 volumes, 12 o (169 x 107 mm). Engraved frontispieces, 16 folding engraved plates, 5 folding leaves of music (one printed in red and black). With half-title in volume I. (Some light browning.) Late 19th century half morocco and marbled boards, gilt edges (some rubbing to joints); cloth folding case. Provenance : W.A. Kittredge (bookplate); Abel E. Berland (bookplate). FIRST AND ONLY EDITION of this major work on French typography, volume I forming a treatise on engraving and typefounding, volume II illustrating a spectacular variety of type specimens. Brunet states that the second volume did not actually appear until 1768. Another two volumes were planned but their publication was forestalled by Fournier's death that year.
