Macindoe (prize bookplate of Glasgow University for first place in physics in May 1879, SIGNED BY WILLIAM THOMSON LORD KELVIN (1824-1907), pencil notes and equations, presumably Macindoe's, on front and back flyleaves). FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH, AN EVOCATIVE ASSOCIATION COPY. Thomson's earliest interests centered on questions drawn from Fourier's Thorie analytique de la chaleur and Laplace's Mcanique cleste , and his first published paper related to heat diffusion. He later succeeded in providing the mathematical proof for the second law of thermodynamics, first formulated by Sadi Carnot. Thomson was Professor of Natural Philosophy at Glasgow University from 1845 until the end of his life.
