Frame: 12 1/2 by 22 7/8in (31.8 by 58cm) the frame, ca. 1900, attributed to Jacob William Heberley (Hakopa Heperi) (1849-1906), finely carved with spiral and curled motifs with parallel lines and dog tooth carvings, two human figures, one on each side, each with protruding tongues. Carte-de-Visites (from left to right): 1. Maori Male Portrait with Facial Tattoos and Hair Ornament, ca. 1870's, 'American Photo Company, Auckland, NZ' Verso numbered '949, 2224' 2. Portrait of a Maori Queen, ca. 1860's, hand colored; The queen with tattoos, feathers in her hair, wearing a woven border cloak, a hei tiki and additional greenstone drops, a greenstone pendant in her right ear. Verso: 'Tapi Ora / Maori Queen / Otaki' in early script. 3. Portrait of Reihana Taukawau, Maori Chief, ca. 1863 A standing, full-length portrait of the chief wearing a cloak, holding a fighting staff with numerous other weapons in the photo. 'Teihana Taukawau' written in sepia ink in early script below the image. (In 1863, Reihand Taukawau accompanied William Jenkins, a Wesleyan lay preacher, and a group of other Maori men and women to England. The group met Queen Victoria and were shown the sights of England. The party returned aboard the "Flying Foam" to New Zealand in 1864. A portrait of Taukawau by John Tremenhere Johnston and painted around the same time, is in the National Library of New Zealand and depicts the chief in European attire. 4. Portrait of a Maori Child, ca. 1870's, Wearing a textile headband and rain cape. Verso: 'W.A. Collis / Photographic Artist / Corner of Devon & Brougham St. / New Plymouth / Negatives Kept Copies Can Always Be Had.' Provenance: Private Collection, New York
