Beschreibung:

Includes draft papers for Lewis Burdick of Scio, New York, dated 18 June 1864, with a notice attached that one could appear at the Board of Enrollment with an acceptable substitute or $300 and be discharged from draft liability. 8.5 x 11 in., notice 2.75 x 3.25 in. All of the Lewis Burdicks listed as serving in New York units enlisted in 1861 or 1862, none after the 1864 draft, so this gentleman must have gotten out of service (or not been caught before the war was over in less than a year). Enlistment certificate in the 68th Regt., 32d Brigade, 8th Division, New York State Militia, for John G. Pelton, as Musician, dated 1 July 1856. 13 x 16 in., folded, with preprinted certificates inside indicating that he was fully equipped and faithfully discharged his duty, for each of seven years, and a statement to that effect signed 27 April 1864. The 68th New York (2nd German Rifles) was mustered into Federal service on 1 Aug. 1861 for three years. And discharge papers for John G. Pelton, a musician in the 68th regiment of N.Y. Vols., dated 20 May 1864. 8.75 x 10.75 in. And appointment papers for Lafayette Thomas, in Company H of the 179th regiment of New York, as Fourth Sergeant, dated 20 January 1865, to date from 13 September 1863. 10 x 14.75 in. Condition: Draft notice with folds, areas of toning (especially where adhesive attaches notice). Pelton's appointment with toning along top, folds beginning to separate (he apparently carried it, and had it signed each year, so it got some wear.) Discharge with scattered toning (one area looks as if it were stuck in a book). Thomas' appointment with folds and overall toning.
