Four leaves from late Mamluk Qur'an, including part of surah An-Nisa (IV) from verse 84 to 85, in Arabic, illuminated manuscript on paper [probably Egypt, late 15th cent] two bifolia, single column, 5 lines of elegant black muhaqqaq, verses marked with three small gold teardrops outlined in black, some very light thumbing, a few faint spots, some very light water-staining along top crease, each leaf 255 by 185 mm. (180 by 110 mm.); both in card mounts These leaves are clearly from the same Mamluk manuscript. By the fifteenth century, Mamluk Qur'ans tend to boast intricate decorations, be full of marginal ornamentation, and have adopted large format leaves with a smaller script. The present Qur'an is completely removed from this trend, and its the bold script and simple presentation hark back to much earlier models where the beauty of the object lies in calligraphy alone.
