FOUR GOSPELS [AWETARAN] IN ARMENIAN, copied by the scribe Yohanes, the priest, MANUSCRIPT ON GLAZED PAPER. [Enkeli, in the village of Manclx, 1578 A.D.] 182 x 140 mm. 304 leaves (apparently lacking 2 leaves). Collation: 1 10 2 12 (-1 cancelled) 3 1 4 4-7 12 8 12 (lacking 9) 9-22 12 23 12 (apparently lacking 9; 10 a replacement leaf) 24 12 25 12 (blank 11 cancelled) 26 12 (8 blank, 9-12 cancelled blanks). Original quire signatures throughout, with recent pencil foliation, 19 lines, double column, ruled in plummet, justification: 128 x 92mm, written in black ink in a regular bolorgir script, concordance numbers in lower margin in small bolorgir, versal initials in uncials, ZOOMORPHIC RED AND BLUE CHAPTER INITIALS, FLORAL AND ABSTRACT RED ORNAMENTS IN OUTER BORDERS, 2 FULL-PAGE PORTRAITS OF THE EVANGELISTS AND 4 LARGE HEADPIECES, marking the opening of each Gospel. (Some worming, mostly marginal, in quires 6, 7, 8, 9, 17, 25 and 26.) BINDING: Contemporary leather over wooden boards, blind-tooled, with a cross on lower cover, geometrical pattern on upper cover, two brass jewelled crosses and one crucifix attached to upper cover, tooled flap and 3 leather thongs. PROVENANCE: The manuscript has a single principal colophon on folios 300-303, which gives a complete history of the book. The scribe is Yohanes vardapet , who copied the manuscript in the church of Saint T'oros and Saint James in the village of Manclx in the land of Enkeli in 1027 (i.e. 1578 A.D.) for his patron T'adeos the philosopher. TEXT: Following the somewhat erratic pencil foliation: St. Matthew (fol. 2-86v); St. Mark (fol. 87-140v) excluding ch. xvi: vv.9-20; St. Luke (fol. 142-233); St. John (fol. 235-303), this includes the episode of the woman taken in adultery; followed by the colophon (fol. 303-305v). DECORATION: There are only two portraits of Evangelists; the other two were never executed and the pages have been left blank. Folio 1v St. Matthew. Folio 141v St. Luke Folios 86v and 234v left blank. The headpieces introducing the Gospels are on ff. 2, 87, 142, 235.
