Lot of 4 cartes de visite of U.S. Grant comprising one as Major General and three as Lieutenant General. All are a genre of mass produced commercial images intended as album fillers celebrating Grant's wartime notoriety, fame that would later catapult the common man from Galena, Illinois to the Presidency. Portraits include: A light view of Grant as Major General and so identified in ink on verso over "Barr & Young, Memphis, Tenn." imprint. The seated photograph capturing a sanguine Lieutenant General wearing frock coat with large open labels and black velvet cuff trim. Ink identified beneath portrait "General U. S. Grant" by "Barr & Young, Memphis." The surprisingly disarming portrait of the Lieutenant General appearing particularly polished and martial in formal frock coat by "E. & H.T. Anthony." The popular likeness of the Lieutenant General wearing a dangling black Lincoln mourning ribbon with printed caption beneath portrait, "Published by Golden & Salmons, Chicago." The Richard B. Cohen Civil War Collection Cowan's is pleased to offer an unparalleled assembly of Brown Water Navy images archived over a lifetime of study by consummate collector Richard B. Cohen, a familiar name to many in the field of Civil War photography. To those who knew him best, Richard B. Cohen will be remembered as a "disciplined collector who maintained a relatively narrow focus having built an important, perhaps unsurpassed collection in his area of specialization." Richard was particularly well read and his historical knowledge informed his collecting as reflected by the photography that follows. The array of carte-de-visites and albumen photographs gathered here include a number of identified naval officers - both famous and obscure - along with a handful of enlisted sailors. It is supremely evident that Richard B. Cohen's collecting instincts were always evolving, but uniformly refined. We trust that both advanced and neophyte collectors will find something to pique interest now that the time has come to inevitably recycle these exceptional images to a new cadre of aficionados. Provenance:The Richard B. Cohen Civil War Collection Condition: 1.) Light with details washed out and flat. Minor soiling and handling, G. 2.) One inch length of albumen torn away from center right margin, slightly light with minor handling wear, G. 3.) The Brady view with strong tones and clarity. Sadly, the mount has been severely trimmed back to the albumen and clipped top and bottom, G. 4.) The mourning view also with strong tones and clarity. Top corners slightly rounded. Some unidentified blue colorant smudged across bottom of mount. Near VG.
