Lot of 4 manuscript documents written by Confederate generals, 1863-1864. Wharton, John A. (1828-1865). Confederate major general and distinguished tactical cavalry commander. ALS, 1p, 7.75 x 9.75 in., "Head Qu. Wharton's Cav Div / McMinville." June 6, 1863. Addressed to General Braxton Bragg (1817-1876), who commanded nearly 40,000 Confederate troops in Tennessee. Wharton acknowledges receipt of Bragg's previously dispatched telegram on behalf of General Joseph Wheeler and discusses the plans for the movements of troops commanded by Wheeler and General John Hunt Morgan (1825-1864), in light of the "concentration of the Enemies [sic] forces at Murfreesboro." Report of desertion, 1p, 9.75 x 7.75 in. Originally submitted by Major General William T. Martin (1823-1910) on February 2, 1864 concerning Captains Musgrove, Wharton, Bennet, and Scurry, all 1st Alabama Cavalry, who have "deserted with their men (some 130) & were on their way home." Received on March 9, 1864 at the Headquarters of the Department of East Tennessee and endorsed boldly by Gilbert Moxley Sorrel (1838-1901), "G.M. Sorrel," for Lieutenant General James Longstreet, whom he served as Chief of Staff. Sorrel was promoted to brigadier general later in the year. Copy of orders, "Special order No. 14," 1p, 8 x 11 in., "Hd. Qrs. Cav Corps / Griffin, Ga." September 2, 1864. Issued by command of Brigadier General Alfred Iverson, whose signature in blue is significantly faded, and Lieutenant Colonel John Cameron Orders concern a saddle manufactory in Fort Valley, GA. Two months earlier, Iverson had captured Union Major General George Stoneman (1822-1894) near Atlanta, ensnaring the highest-ranking Union officer captured during the Civil War. Maury, Dabney H. (1822-1900). Confederate general and commander of the District of the Gulf. ALS, 1p, 8.125 x 10.625 in., Mobile, AL. October 2, 1864. Addressed to Thomas H. Watts (1819-1892), who served as Governor of Alabama 1863-1865. Letters concerns the relief a militia unit, per Watt's orders, despite the "diminution of the command here, occasioned by the furloughing of the Reserves. . . and the extraordinary number of sick." Condition: Condition varies. Wharton document with significant loss, including at body of letter. Maury letter with visible adhesive repairs, and fading to Iverson letter.
