Dew); China, Order of the Striped Tiger, 5th Class breast badge, silver-gilt and enamel, reverse with Chinese stamp mark and additionally stamped, ‘7XII’, mounted as worn, contained in Spink, London leather case, good very fine and better (4) £750-850 Footnote Order of the Striped Tiger, 5th Class London Gazette 17 February 1920. ‘Temporary Captain George Charles Worgan Dew, Labour Corps.’ George Charles Worgan Dew was born in Wolvesnewton, Monmouthshire in 1879, the son of the Rev. George Platt Dew, Rector of Wolvesnewton. He was educated at Schorne College, Winslow, Buckinghamshire and Dean Close Memorial School, Cheltenham. At the time of the Great War he was employed by the Chinese Government Railway Service on Secretarial Duties. Commissioned a Temporary Lieutenant on the General List in March 1917 (London Gazette 14 March 1917). He applied for a commission in the Chinese Labour Corps in July 1917. At the time of his application, he had been working in China for 18 years, had a working knowledge of the language and was used to handling Chinese workers. Noticeably on his papers (re. the China Medal), he records no previous military experience. As a Lieutenant on the General List, he entered the France/Flanders theatre of war on 30 July 1917. Later served as a Captain, being released from the Army in June 1919 and relinquished his commission in November 1920. Awarded the Order of the Striped Tiger 5th Class for his wartime services.
