Mesolimulus walchi Late Jurassic Solnhofen, Kimmeridgian, Bavaria, Germany A successful group that has changed little from its first appearance 250 million years ago, the Horseshoe Crab has a distinctly primitive appearance. The wide, low shell provides stability, making it difficult for predators to turn the Horseshoe Crab over. Horseshoe crabs aren’t related to crabs, but rather to scorpions and spiders. They live in shallow near-shore waters, occasionally venturing onto land. The matrix of the present specimen displays a long natural crack cutting across the Horseshoe Crab; dendrites are seen along the crack and at some of the edges of the slab. 17 ¼ x 13 1/8 x 3/8in
