Beschreibung:

Hexaprotodon sivalensis Pliocene Southeast Asia Two million years ago, at the beginning of the Upper Pleistocene Era, Southeast Asia was a continent rather than a chain of islands. Variable sea levels obscured and exposed large areas of land repeatedly, while tectonic activity and active volcanism contributed to the transformation of the terrain. Fossils from this area illustrate the prehistoric continental landscape as the same species can be found from Indonesia to Malaysia and the Philippines. As a result of the changing sea level separating the land mass into islands, several dwarf species emerged. Hexaprotodon were ancient creatures, which were similar in size to the modern Pygmy Hippopotamus of Madagascar. However, this extinct hippopotamus species lived during the Pliocene and Pleistocene, and fossils have been found in India, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, and Nepal. Fossil specimens of this kind are scarce, and those that are found tend to be incomplete. Offered is a beautifully preserved skull specimen. Measures 19 x 14 x 18in on stand
