This rare Mercedes-Benz 600 is one of only 85 examples manufactured in six-door Pullman configuration. Offered with copies of its original documentation, the car was delivered new to East Berlin in May 1965 for the Government of the German Democratic Republic. At this time the GDR did not have a president, the post having been abolished when the previous incumbent, Wilhelm Pieck, died in 1960. From then onwards the de facto president was Walter Ulbricht, Chairman of the Council of State. After its period of diplomatic service ended, the Pullman formed part of Mr Olivier Delafon's museum collection of 'heads of state' motor cars for many years, during which time it was kept on display and not used. The car was acquired by current owner - a professional automobile engineer - in 1992 and restored by him, since when it has been meticulously maintained. Apart from the engine, which is original, the rear axle, gearbox, brakes, air conditioning, transmission propshaft, suspension, lighting, electrics, hydraulic and air suspension systems, and wheels (x4) have all been restored using new original parts (bills available). Repainted in 1993, the car is handsomely finished in Navy Blue livery with the optional, and very expensive, grey cord velour upholstery to the interior, the latter's burr walnut woodwork and interior brightwork being described as in perfect original condition. Particularly desirable options include a sliding sunroof to the rear; glass compartmental division; VHS tape player; front and rear telephones (two lines); Becker Grand Prix radio with automatic station search; a second independent radio; original intercom system; rear centre console with clock and sound system controls; rear cocktail bar complete with two carafes, glasses and Champagne flutes; two bottles of Calèche de Hermès perfume with Christian Dior spray and a full refill (unobtainable nowadays); and a cigar box containing genuine Havana cigars. A photocopied catalogue listing these options comes with the car. Used by the vendor as his main vehicle, the Pullman currently displays a total of 151,397 kilometres on the odometer and is said to be an enjoyable driver's car, despite impressive dimensions that include a length of 6.24m (approximately 20' 6"). Offered with French Carte Grise, the Mercedes has countless concours d'élégance 1st place awards to its credit and has been featured in many magazines published in France, Switzerland, England, Austria and Germany.
