Mercedes-Benz's answer to the Grosser Mercedes of the past arrived in 1963 in the not inconsiderable form of the all-new 600. Built in 5/6 seater Limousine and 7/8 seater Pullman versions - the latter's overall length of more than 20 feet exceeding that of the biggest Cadillac - the 600 was powered by a 6.3-litre V8 engine capable of propelling the mammoth saloon to 60mph in under 10 seconds and on to a top speed of 125mph-plus. Supremely well-equipped, the new Grosser incorporated air suspension incorporating variable ride control, four-speed automatic transmission, all-round disc brakes, power-assisted steering, central locking and separate heating/ventilation systems for front and rear compartments. In addition, almost everything on the car that could be moved or adjusted - from seats to the sunroof - was hydraulically powered. Needless to say, the interior, with its leather upholstery and real wood embellishment, exhibited craftsmanship of the highest order. Offered with copies of the original purchase documentation, this beautiful Mercedes-Benz 600 limousine was delivered new to Paris in December 1967 for its first owner, the Comte du Chandon de Briailles of the Moët et Chandon Champagne winery. The car is finished in blue metallic livery with the optional, and very expensive, blue-grey cord velour upholstery to the interior, the latter's woodwork and interior brightwork being described as in perfect original condition. Particularly desirable options include a large sliding sunroof; refrigerated bar; illuminated parcel shelf; television; VHS tape player; front and rear telephones; and Becker Grand Prix radio with automatic station search. The car was acquired by current owner - a professional automobile engineer – 20 or so years ago, since when it has been meticulously maintained. Used by the vendor as his main vehicle, the '600' currently displays a total of 139,956 kilometres on the odometer and is said to be an enjoyable driver's car, its impressive dimensions notwithstanding. The Mercedes has countless concours d'élégance 1st place awards to its credit and has been featured in Rétroviseur magazine and other specialist motoring journals. The car is offered with the aforementioned original paperwork, its original service booklet, sundry service invoices and French Carte Grise normale.
