Beschreibung:

FORD, Gerald R. Typed letter signed ("Gerald R. Ford") to Rich Gilley, 10 September 1992. 1 page, 8vo, on personal stationery, with 8 x 10 in. glossy photograph of Ford . "WE CANNOT GAMBLE FOR FOUR YEARS WITH A CARTER/CLINTON TYPE OF CHANGE." A fine Ford letter that takes aim at two of his Democratic Party suceesors. Ford thanks Gilley for his "generous comments on my speech at the Republican Convention in Houston. It was an honor and pleasure for me to speak on behalf of President Bush who has done a fine job, especially with the problems of dealing with a non-helpful Democratic Congress. President Bush can win if we all do our very best. Betty and I will maximize our efforts on his behalf. We cannot gamble for four years with a Carter/Clinton type of change." Ford - now in his 93rd year - has been a valued elder statesman for the GOP, and has devoted much time and energy to philanthropic and humanitarian projects, often in collaboration with the two former Democratic Presidents he swipes at here. Until the most recent GOP convention in New York in 2004, Ford had attended every Republican conclave dating back to 1940. "I was one of the young rebels," he told the party delegates in 1996, "who stormed onto the Convention floor in Philadelphia shouting 'We Want Wilkie!' That was my first whiff of political campaigning -- I'll tell you a secret: I did inhale."
