FOOTE, Samuel (1720-1777). Autograph letter signed to W. Woodfall, Dublin, 20 December [1773] , sending 'the prologue with which I opened my Dramatic Campaign in this Country', mentioning his fees, commenting on the state of the stage, 'Sheridan, that bit of Buskin'd Buckram has produced his quaint frigidity in the part of Cato to a very poor house since which he has retired to plant cabbages in his Native Bog', with two pages devoted to his prologue, 4¼ pages, 4to (234 x185mm) , (rather soiled, address leaf torn and repaired). Samuel Foote writes to the one-time actor, now editor of the 'London Packet', saying that his fees are 50 guineas a night and that his popularity warrants that figure, that the stage is sterile at the moment, and commenting on the political situation in Ireland, 'All opposition to Government is here put to an end too (sic), the Dropsy that carryd of the Duke of Leinster having drowned most of the Patriots', and giving his Prologue (37 lines in rhyme) with notes, 'Mr Footes first appearance as a performer was in the Theatre of Smock Ally' and alluding to the meaning of the text.
