oil on oak panelunframed: 45.6 x 34.3 cm.; 18 x 13½ in.framed: 57.6 x 47 cm.; 22⅝ x 18½ in. Condition reportThe following condition report is provided by Henry Gentle who is an external specialist and not an employee of Sotheby's: Master of the St. Ursula Legend Madonna and Child Oil on panel, unframed The oak support is flat. It has one small 10cm vertical fracture to the top left of the composition. The paint layer is well preserved; it is slightly raised along the vertical grain, but is stable. In some areas minor abrasion has occurred leading to compromising of the more delicate applied glazes and subsequent loss of definition. These areas include the shadows of the Madonna's face and hair, Christ's skin tones, the brickwork and shadows to the fold of Madonna's dress. A reduction of minor loss to the sky and to the shrinkage craquelure can be detected. Many areas are in a very good original condition with delicate details to facial features and hands intact, and the textured paint to the brocaded sleeve of the Madonna and the highlights to her hair retained. The colours are strong and saturate well and the chromatic intensity and tonal values are well preserved. The painting presents well.
