Beschreibung:

FOLENGO, Teofilo. Opus... macaronicorum. Amsterdam: Abraham van Someren, 1692. 8° (153 x 104mm). Engraved portrait frontispiece and 26 half-page illustrations. Blue straight-grained morocco gilt, covers with decoration composed from fillets, roll-tools and various small tools, including interlocked rectangular and lozenge-shaped panels, the flat spine in six compartments, lettered in two, the others with a repeat pattern composed from various small tools, gilt turn-ins, pink watered-silk doublures and liners, bordered in gilt, g.e., by Christian Kalthoeber (with his orange ticket on front free-endpaper), (slight wear to joints). Provenance : William Beckford (pencilled Fonthill inventory number, sale Hamilton Palace lot 3030); Samuel Putnam Avery (loosely inserted armorial bookplate, sale in 1919, lot 347). An unusual binding from Beckford's library by Kalthoeber, one of the foremost British binders of his time. Beckford's somewhat idiosyncratic taste is evident in this echo of French 16th-century design, executed in the neo-classical vernacular. The work is decorated with charming plates, which ably illustrate this scholarly edition of Folengo's macaronic poetry.
