Beschreibung:

folding chromolithographed map, modern cloth, old printed blue wrappers bound in (frayed at edges and laid down), 1901; Report of the Committee appointed by the Board of Trade to enquire into the Vibration produced by the working of the Traffic on the Central London Railway, 2 vol. in 1 including Appendices, lithographed plates, small tear to lower edge of second title repaired, modern cloth, 1901-02, folio (2) *** At the beginning of the 20th century, a large number of (often competing) proposals were made to Parliament for the construction of new tube lines. The 1901 Joint Select Committee report is a review of the situation and includes a reference to the problem of vibration then under consideration by the Committee appointed by the Board of Trade consisting of Lord Rayleigh, Sir John Wolfe Barry and Prof. Ewing. The committee took evidence from owners and occupiers of properties along the line of the CLR and vibration caused by passing trains was measured at many points along the line. The committee recommended various ways in which the problem could be reduced, particularly the use of multi-unit trains with reduced unsprung axle loads.
