FLOWN ON APOLLO 13 – Cloth mission emblem, signed by both astronauts below the emblem: " Flown to the moon on Apollo 13, Fred Haise, Apollo 13 LMP." A Beta cloth crew emblem flown aboard the Apollo 13 mission. This Beta cloth emblem was identical to the emblems each Apollo 13 astronaut wore on their shoulders of their space suits during the mission and were from the same production run that produced those. The design was done at the suggestion of the crew who, according to Haise's account, "had the initial idea of the mythical god Apollo driving his horse drawn chariot across the sky dragging the sun with him. We passed this idea to artist Lumen Winter who created the emblem of three horses traveling from the earth, symbolizing the three astronauts of an Apollo mission. He placed the horses above the moon with the sun in the background. It is interesting to note that this design resembles a painting he did for the St. Regis Hotel in New York City which featured three horses racing across a cloud-filled sky, with a fourth falling behind. It is a bit ironic about that fourth horse, because just a few days before our launch, Command Module Pilot Thomas K. (Ken) Mattingly had to be replaced by Jack Swigert due to a potential illness." Beta cloth emblem, 8 inches square. [With:] Fred Haise's typed and signed letter of provenance dated 11 April 2005.
