Beschreibung:

FLOWN ON APOLLO 13 – A plug from the Apollo 13 command module aft heat shield. A heat shield plug that survived colder-than-planned temperatures to protect the Apollo 13 crew during re-entry to Earth's atmosphere. One of the major problems encountered by the Apollo 13 crew following the oxygen tank explosion was a loss of electrical power in the service module which, in turn, resulted in the loss of heat. Over the course of the flight the crew and Mission control grew concerned that the heat shield may have been compromised due to exposure to the extreme cold. Fortunately for the crew, the heat shield worked as planned and they were able to return to Earth safely. This was one of several threaded plugs designed to allow access to important access points of the Command Module. With : Fred Haise's typed and signed letter of provenance dated 15 May 2019. Steel heat shield plug coated in phenolic epoxy resin, 1 inch diameter, 3 inches tall. Encased in a 4 inch tall, 3 inch diameter Lucite cylinder and mounted to a 7 by 5 inches wood base to which a brass plaque reading: "Apollo 13, April 11-17, 1970."
