FLOWN APOLLO 11 COMMAND MODULE FRAGMENT – Foil segment, 1969. A fragment of the Command Module Columbia that spent 195 hours in space and 30 times orbited the Moon. [With:] Buzz Aldrin's typed and signed letter of provenance, reading: " The segment placed here was removed from Command Module Columbia after the first manned lunar landing mission during July 16 to 24, 1969. This flown segment is from my personal collection .” Part of the thermal protection system that covered the entire outer surface of Columbia , this foil segment traveled nearly 500,000 miles during the Apollo 11 flight and was exposed to the vacuum of space for over 195 hours, including almost 60 hours in lunar orbit. Foil segment, 0.5 by 0.25 inches. [With:] An official NASA photolithograph of the Apollo 11 astronauts, SIGNED and INSCRIBED by Buzz ALDRIN, 10 by 9 inches. Archivally matted to 13.5 by 11.75 inches.
