FLORIO, John (1553?-1625). Queen Anna's New World of Words, or Dictionarie of the Italian and English Tongues , London: M. Bradwood for E. Blount and W. Barret, 1611. 2° (283 x 181mm). Title within an architectural woodcut border, engraved portrait of Florio by William Hole (Border shaved at head and very slightly defective at lower fore-corner, a few rust-holes, those in A1 and K1 with minimal damage to text, wormhole in fore-margins throughout, repaired in the title, 2 other wormholes in the fore-margins in the last third, some browning and spotting.) Contemporary Spanish red morocco, gilt spine, narrow border round sides enclosing, on front cover, the arms of Felipe Ramirez de Guzman, Duke of Medina de las Torres, and, on the back cover, a heraldic crest with the legend Revoluta foecundant , gilt edges (rubbed and a little stained, hinges becoming weak). Provenance : Felipe Ramirez de Guzman -- Sir William Godolphin (?1634-1696), ambassador and Jacobite, died in Spain (signature at foot of title); Alan Lubbock (bookplate). This is one of many books from the library of Felipe Ramirez de Guzman, Viceroy of Naples, 1637-1644, whose second wife (whose arms he impales) was Anna Caraffa, daughter of the Duke of Mondragone and Elena Aldobrandini. His first wife was Marie de Guzman, daughter of Gaspar de Guzman, Count of Olivares to whose titles he succeeded, through his marriage, on Olivares' death. On the arms on both covers there is an acrologic description of his Guzman titles and since Felipe would not have been able to use them until after his father-in-law's death it indicates that the book was bound after 1645 and therefore probably in Spain.
