Beschreibung:

Florence Elliott McClung oil painting on masonite,
"Guia de Forasteros en la Siempre Fiel Isla de Cuba" dated 1862, Habana. Title page: Signature "Aug. 2, 1864 A. Lincoln". Title page contains a blue ink stamp: "Biblioteca Abraham Lincoln". Verso of tipped in fold out chart: "Please assemble particulars of our respective friends and secret agents to co-operate. A. Lincoln". Appendix page 40 under cellophane tape a label reading " Ernest Hemingway Vigia y Steinhart. San Francisco de Paula". Photocopy affixed to inside of back board reads: "Patrimonia Nacional Calle a 17 Export No. 2707432 Research Services London - to be sold outside Cuba" with two Cuban Revenue stamps dated 1957-1958. Notes: The U.S slid into civil war at a time the South still hoped that the acquisition of Cuba would enable them to perpetuate slavery inside or outside the Union. The book itself is a census of influential people in Cuba at the time - lawyers, officials, accountants and army and navy chiefs annotated in red and blue pencil. Included in the lot a 39" x 31" watercolor, wash and chalk study of President Lincoln with plaque and paper tag indicating the artist to be A. Brouwer (b. 1816 - d. 1879) entitled "The President R.I.P". Paper label further states the portrait was removed from the United States Consulate, Liverpool, England and Ex-Collection of Eaton G. Horner. (Horner was the detective who arrested Samuel Arnold a co-conspirator of John Wilkes Booth in a plot to kidnap the President in Washington on March 17, 1865.) The accompanying book was discovered wrapped in craft paper behind the portrait when the original glass was damaged. 6.25"H x 4.75"W x 1.25"D, Circa - 1862.
