Flora Danica ]. Icones plantarum sponte nascentium in regnis Daniae et Norvegiae, in ducatibus Slesvici et Holsatiae et in comitatibus Oldenburgi et Delmenhorstiae ... Florae Danicae nomine inscriptum , edited by Georg Christian Oeder [vols. I-III], Otto Frederik Müller [vols. IV-V], Martin Vahl [vols. VI-VII], J.W. Hornemann [vols. VIII-XIII] and others. Copenhagen: Nicolas Möller [and others], [1761]-1883 -- Johann LANGE Nomeclator 'Florae Danicae' . Copenhagen: 1887. 18 volumes, comprising 51 fascicles in 17 volumes, 3 supplements in one volume and Lange's index volume, 2° (367 x 230mm), index in 4° (258 x 195mm). Volumes I-XI with titles in red and black, 3240 hand-coloured or colour-printed numbered engraved plates by M. Kössler, C.F. Müller, J.T. Bayer, Petersen, C. Thornam, Kaltenhafer, J. Hansen, and A. Thornam after M. Rössler, C.F. Müller, J.T. Bayer and others, a few with folding flaps. (Creasemarks to some plates in vol. II, some browning and spotting to plates in vols. XV-XVIII, spotting occasionally heavy [fasc. 49 in vol. XVII printed on a darker paper], title to vol. VIII spotted.) Late 19th-century Scandinavian half calf and brown marbled boards, contrasting morocco lettering-pieces, the index volume in non-uniform mottled half calf. Provenance : Otto Salmonson (bookplate). A COMPLETE SET OF THIS GREAT EUROPEAN FLORA, published over a 125-year period. One of the most ambitious botanical publications of its age, Flora Danica covers the plants of Norway, Greenland, Iceland, the Faroe Islands, much of Northern Germany and some Swedish flora, besides Denmark itself, and includes flowers, grasses and fungi. Dunthorne calls it 'superbly coloured, mostly very minute and accurate, colouring sufficiently opaque to conceal engraved lines.' As Nissen notes, some of the later plates were colour-printed. Publication began in 1761 with three fascicles to the volume, volume I reaching completion in 1764 [dated 1766]; the three supplements appeared in 1853, 1865 and 1874. The early plates were designed by Martin Rössler (fascs. 1-11) and Friderik Müller (fascs. 11-21), and engraved on fine Honig paper. Dunthorne 218; Great Flower Books (1990), p. 69; Hunt 594; Nissen BBI 2249; Pritzel 6799; Stafleu and Cowan 7001 and 7008. (18)
