Flora Danica: G.C. Oeder, Otto Friedrich Müller J.W. Hornemann, Johan Lange and others (eds.): Icones Plantarum sponte nascentium in Regnis Daniæ et Norvegiæ, in Ducatibus Slesvici et Holsatiæ, et in Comitatibus Oldenburgui et Delmenhorstiæ: Ad illustrandum opus [...] Floræ Danicæ [...]. 17 vols. Each vol. incl. 3 fascicles with 60 plates each, numbered I-MMMLX. Cph 1761–1883. + 3 supplementary fascicles, bound in one volume numbered I-CDXXX. Cph 1853, 1865 and 1874. All in folio. (Vol. I-IX: c. 36.8×24 cm., vol. X-XVII + Supplement binding: c. 37.5×24.5 cm). The set is complete with a total of 3240 engraved and hand-coloured plates, all numbered continuously. Main title leaves to each volume in Latin, printed in red and black in the first 12 vols., the rest with title leaves printed in black, vol. XV and XVI with main titles in facsimile/reprint. Half titles to 45 (of 54) fascicles, mostly in Latin, a few in German (text and title leaves of Flora Danica were published in 3 languages: Danish, Latin and German). Text leaves placed before plates to each 54 fascicles, one fascicle in vol. XI with reprinted text leaves. Due to more than 120 years of production of the flora the paper quality and thickness of the paper varies throughout the work. In this set fascicles 46, 47, 48, 50, 51 + last Supplement fascicle are on thin paper, compared to the other fascicles and to other sets we have seen earlier. Enclosed the rare index Joh. Lange: Nomenclator “Florae Danicae” sive, Index systematicus et alphabeticus [...]. Cph 1887. 1st ed. 4to. Untrimmed. Bound with the orig. wrappers. The set is professionally rebound (2019) in nice, uniform half leather bindings, with gilt spines and orig. decorated paperboards, vols. X-XVII and Supplement binding with red edges (Bøthuns Bokverksted). (19) With its impressive 3240 plates published in booklets between 1761 and 1883, Flora Danica is not just the world's largest publication on flora, but also the work that has taken the longest to complete in the history of Denmark. With 3240 exceptional clean and beautifully hand-coloured botanical plates. Very rare in complete sets. Nissen, BBI #2249; Bibl. Danica II, 190; Sitwell and Blunt: Great Flower Books 1700–1900. New York 1990, p. 124; H. Knudsen: Flora Danica. Cph 2014. Provenance: Sold from Boghallens Antikvariat (Copenhagen) in 1975 to a private collector, bougt by current owner at auction in London in the 1990s.
