PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY FLEMING TO THE DESIGNER OF THE DUST JACKET, RICHARD CHOPPING on the front free endpaper: "To Dickie Who made this book! from Ian Fleming " Fleming and Chopping corresponed weekly over the details of the dust jacket design. (See also lots 97 and 103). Thunderball was the source of much frustration for Fleming: he had neglected to credit Kevin McClory and Jack Whittingham, with whom he had collaborated on the writing of the screenplay, and they brought suit against him and Ivar Bryce, part-owner of the script. After ten days battling in court, they negotiated a settlement. Fleming gave up his share of the film rights to McClory, and McClory disclaimed any interest in the novel, and received a large settlement.
