Original black boards, decorated in blind and silver; pictorial dust jacket after a design by Richard Chopping (tear to upper flap of dust jacket, remains of tape repair; slight rubbing to lower panel). Provenance : Richard Chopping (presentation inscription, his signature on upper flap of dust jacket). FIRST EDITION. PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY FLEMING TO THE DESIGNER OF THE DUST JACKET, RICHARD CHOPPING on the front free endpaper: "To Dickie In admiration! from Ian." Fleming wrote to Chopping on June 22, 1961 with ideas for the dust jacket: "The jacket season has come round again and I and the Capes do pray that you will once again be the artist... The title of the book is The Spy Who Loved Me and so what suggests itself of course is a juxtaposition between a dagger or a gun and an emblem representing love, rather on the lines of your gun with a rose." Fleming was perfectly pleased with Chopping's design and wrote on October 31 "I really must send you my warmest and most grateful congratulations for your splendid new jacket, which we all think is absolutly up to the tremendously high standards of the others..." Fleming met Vivienne Michel (mentioned as collaborator on the title page) in Jamaica. He became infatuated with the young French woman, and in a gesture of great chivalry he credited her as collaborator although she had no part in the writing of the book.
