Large 2 o (465 x 330 mm). 20 lithographed plates by Beraud-Lauras or Engelman (some without imprint, some scattered mostly pale spotting). A PRESENTATION BINDING FOR CHARLES X, contemporary quarter green morocco, dark green paper-covered sides, flat paneled spine, gilt-lettered presentation lettering on front cover. Provenance : Charles X (1757-1836), King of France and Navarre (binding). A UNIQUE COLLECTION, BOUND FOR PRESENTATION TO CHARLES X. Though stamped 'Vol. I' on the spine, there is no record of any further volumes, or of any other copies of this particular volume. The majority of the fine lithographed plates relate to horses and cavalry, while others show various firearms and weapons, and two show a naval engagement and a war-gallery. Flandre d'Espinay was born in Lyon and after holding various cavalry posts he entered the service of the Grand Master of the Knights of Malta. He later devoted himself to horse breeding. The presentation of this volume was made, according to the lettering on the cover, during an audience granted him by the Emperor on 23 May 1825. Although Menessier de la Lance devotes over three pages to d'Espinay and his publication, he does not cite the present volume. He does note three of the lithographs.
