(Five Centuries: Furniture, Paintings & Works of Art from 1600, 4th September 2019) WILLIAM IV MAHOGANY PEDESTAL DESK, BY T. WILLSON, LONDON 19TH CENTURY of small size, the top with a red leather insert and a moulded edge, above three frieze drawers, raised on banks of three short drawers on plinth bases, the centre drawer stamped 'T. WILLSON/69 GREAT QUEEN STREET/ LONDON' 106cm wide, 76cm high, 65cm deep Provenance: By repute Bryngwyn Hall, Llanfyllin Note: Thomas Willson is listed as a furniture broker and appraiser at 68 Great Queen Street in London between 1821-29, and is likely to be the ‘Thomas Wilson’ recorded as an auctioneer at 28 Great Queen Street, 1799-1825. As well as retailing second-hand furniture, by companies like Gillows, paper labels used by the firm suggest Willson was also a cabinet maker. Following his death, his widow Mary and son, Matthew continued the firm, from 1830 until 1837.
