Deuyded in seuen sermons was made and compyled by ...Johan Fyssher...bysshop of Rochester at the exortacyon and sterynge of the moost excellent princesse Margarete countesse of Rychemount and Derby... London: Wynkyn de Worde 12 June 1509 [i.e. 1518?]. 4 o (190 x 137 mm). Woodcut royal arms on title, full-page woodcut printer's device (McKerrow 20) on verso of last leaf, small woodcut of David and Bathsheba on a2 (Hodnett 632). (Two small wormholes on last two leaves touching letters, paper flaw on cc6 v affecting a few letters, a few minor marginal stains, otherwise a very fine, crisp copy.) Binding : contemporary English calf over wooden boards, front cover with large four-compartment panel in blind, each containing the standing figure of saint: John the Baptist, Barbara, Catharine and Nicholas with their insignia (Weale R.158), within a leafy border containing thistles and acorns (Weale R.159), rear cover with a border of scallop roll and acorns surrounding central panel with parallel floral rolls, spine plain with three raised bands (foot of spine repaired, lower corners repaired, lacks clasp); cloth folding case. Provenance : "Thomas Andereus Weyf" (i.e. Thomas Andrew's wife, 16th-century ownership inscription on rear pastedown) -- William Jenny (18th-century signature and purchase note on front pastedown) -- donated to SMS 12 December 1946. A VERY FINE COPY IN A CONTEMPORARY BLIND-PANELLED BINDING. This is the third of the three editions dated 1509, and probably dates from circa 1518. The Fruitful Sayings of David are a collection of sermons on the psalms of David by Bishop John Fisher of Rochester, delivered in the court of Princess Margaret of Richmond. The sermons consist of line-by-line meditations on the psalms, with an abundance of quotations from other scriptural sources. This copy was likely bound for Wynkyn de Worde and other examples of books printed by him in bindings with the same panel stamps are known. See Oldham Blind Panels of English Binders , nos. QUAD.6, AC.6, and ST.27; also Hobson Bindings in Cambridge LIbraries , pl. XIX. VERY RARE: STC locates only four copies of this edition. STC 10904.
