Didot, besides being a book collector, was a typefounder and engraver who, according to the preface, decided to sell his collection in order to focus on his art as a typographer. Especially rich in the editiones principes of the Latin and Greek authors, Didot's collection also included the Abbé Rive's copy of the Gutenberg Bible which bought-in at 1,000 francs and is now in the New York Public Library.
