lot of 12. An exceptional group of albumen images, includes six 9 x 7" images mounted on larger 12.75 x 9" cream boards; four 7.5 x 5.5" images mounted on 10.75 x 8.25" cream boards, and two other slightly smaller images, one of which is unmounted. All likely taken by George Barnard or one of his operators. A number of these are not illustrated in Hoobler's (1986) Cities Under the Gun. Includes the following Nashville images: a fine, close view of the U.S. Sanitary Commission offices; Union troops and cannons posed atop the state Capitol building; a map of the city locating hospitals. Chattanooga images include: a mid-distance view of the rail barn and Adams Express building, with the Crutchfield House in the foreground; troops posed on the Citico Mound; an exceptionally fine view of U.S. Colored troops posed in formation with tents and with the construction of a redoubt on Cameron Hill underway in the distance; an oval image of a "stick-type" railroad bridge over the Elk River; a view on top of Lookout Mountain, with "Balanced Rock" and other formations, including a large photographer's view camera visible at the extreme right of the plate; a fine overview of the nearly completed Market Street bridge over the Tennessee River at Chattanooga with railroad repair buildings in the foreground; a fine view of the railroad bridge over the Tennessee River at Strawberry Plains, with fortifications visible on the hilltop in the distance; and a home -- probably one of buildings in Chattanooga used for officer's headquarters, with an American flag and a huge flagpole visible; finally, a small 6 x 4" unmounted image of a Vicksburg, MS street scene with the Washington's photograph gallery visible. Provenance: Property of the Western Reserve Historical Society Condition: Most prints rich, with dark tones, several mounts with minor soiling.
