Lot of roughly 500 photographs of the Black Hills area dating from the early 1930s. 297 of the photographs are 3.5" x 6" buckram backed silver gelatin prints, each stamped Holland Print/Scobie Studio/Sleepy Eye, Minn. on verso, hole punched and bound in three ring black imitation leather albums of 40 photographs each (and one of 17). Of the remaining 200+ photographs, most are 3" x 5" prints from the same negatives mounted on 4" x 6" gray card stock, while about 40 are unmounted prints measuring the same size or smaller. Several of the mounts have typewritten paper labels applied to verso with a brief identification, and they indicate that the collection was most likely that of someone with a serious interest in geology, probably a teacher, professor, or mining engineer. One series of photos show a group of young men and women identified on the label as geology students from the University of Minnesota who toured the area for six weeks. All of the most famous landmarks of the Black Hills are represented, including several views of Devil's Tower, The Needles, Sylvan Lake, and Harney Peak, as well as close-ups of rock formations exhibiting angular unconformities and other geologic phenomena. There are also several photographs from the interior of a museum showing diagrams and prehistoric creatures, two photos of ancient petroglyphs, and an emphasis on mining operations. The photographs that do not fit this mold include views of Black Hills towns such as Deadwood, Lead, Spearfish, Terry, and Rapid City (the Rapid City photographs showing an enormous black smoke cloud rising up from the outer edge of the city, identified on verso Warren Lamb Lumber Company Fire in Rapid City 1931), and photographs of a baseball game and a well-attended football game on a picturesque hillside gridiron. However, the most important photograph is certainly one of Mount Rushmore in its early stages of construction, with Washington's head nearly finished and work on Jefferson's recently begun to the left. This dates the photo to exactly 1931, as sculptor Gutzon Borglum found the rock in that area too soft, destroyed the original bust of Jefferson, and began work on the other side of Washington. Condition: Excellent condition. Exceptional clarity.
