probably belonging to the anonymous (no photo?) William F. Bradley who advanced through the ranks of Company G to become Major & AAA, having 14 military cdv's with a tinted sixth plate tintype identified only as Shaffer, a likely member of Company B. Potential buyers should note that the album was consigned with a tenuous attribution to George Armstrong Custer, ostensibly through his wife's--Elizabeth Clift Bacon's--McFarlane relatives in Ohio. Lacking tangible provenance, something verifiably signed in either of their hands, we believe the connection doubtful and otherwise too far removed to be of import. William Bradley's later 4th Corps staff association is probably behind the 6 identified cartes of western serving Generals. They include a common McPherson, Logan, Sherman, and Wood, all except Sherman by Morse's Gallery of the Cumberland and all with late 1864 blue-green revenue stamps. Also, a less common cdv of Brevet Major General Samuel Beatty by "Morse's." A desirable composite vignette of Custer and Libby with 11 of his staff, each numbered and identified in ink on verso, is present in near VG condition with some handling evident. Other officers include a rough but signed cartes of M.J. Vreeland, Lt. Col. 4th Mich V.I. who was wounded at Gettysburg and brevetted Brigadier General in March 1865. Vreeland is identified again on the back with the added notation, property of Wm. F. Bradley Adrian, Mich. Two of the 4th Michigan reorganized captains with prior service are, Perrin C. Goodnell, Company H (discharged 9/18/65), and Charles H. Barnett, Company C (mo 2/26/66), previously sergeant in the 1st Michigan Infantry. There are two unidentified lieutenants with Adrian backmarks and tax stamps dating them to the summer of 1864. Another soldiers identified in pencil as Cavens is probably Private Riley W. Cavins of Company B who mustered out 5/26/66. One more private wearing a military vest beneath a civilian frock coat is unknown. The last cartes by N. Adams, Adrian is a fantastic shot of an officer with 2nd lieutenant straps holding a small cornet or saxhorn armed with a holstered pistol on non-regulation belt rig. He is also unidentified except for the "4" on his kepi. Finally, there is a good quarter plate tintype thought to be either 19 year-old Private Alexander Shaffer (mo 2/10/66) or 21 year-old Corporal Alphonzo Shaffer (discharged as sergeant 2/3/66), both of Company B., 4th Michigan, wearing a sky blue tinted infantry pattern overcoat and forage cap without insignia. A cryptic contemporary genealogical notation written in the case reads, Grandfather of Rosebel Shaffer Denies. Also with the group is a double sixth plate Union case with tintypes of two children identified on a separate piece of paper as Ada and Thomas McFarlane. How the McFarlane children relate to the album is problematic, but they are presented in an accompanying typed note as the definitive link between Libby Bacon Custer's relations in Ohio and the General himself. Condition:All material in generally G overall condition with some of the CDV's, notably Vreeland's, showing signifcant handling and wear. The uncommon Custer Staff vignette VG as stated. Shaffer tintype in soft focus with crazing in top varnish.
