First edition, published from the manuscripts by Hernan Gallego and Luis de Belmonte Bermudez, respectively giving accounts of the voyages of Mendaña to the Solomon Islands in 1567 and Fernandez de Quirós’s in 1595 and 1605 (including Quirós’s own eight memorial). Pedro Fernandez de Quirós (1565-1615) born in Evora/Portugal had previously sailed with the galleons plying between the Philippine Islands and Mexico and hat acquired a profound knowledge of navigation. With 6 folded maps (1 coloured) showing the Solomon Islands, the Santa Cruz Islands, the Marquesas, the routes of Quirós; another map the New Hebrides which Quirós considered to be the sought after Terra Australis. He named the New Hebrides therefore Austrialia del Espiritu Santo. - Some browning and foxing in places. Uncut copy bound in recent half-calf, original wrappers bound in (spotted and somewhat soiled, few small marginal defects, partly restored).
