Federal Mahogany and Mahogany Veneer-inlaid Card Table, Massachusetts, c. 1795-1800, the top with inlaid edge, serpentine front and half-serpentine ends joining canted and paneled corners, above the conformingly shaped apron of mahogany panels surrounded by bird's-eye maple crossbanding and cockbeading, all on square double tapering legs ending in cuffs, old refinish, (imperfections), ht. 29 1/4, wd. 38 1/2, dp. 18 1/4 in. Provenance: Descended in the Colonel James Barrett family of Concord, Massachusetts. Barrett was a militia captain, selectman, town meeting moderator, and prominent political figure in Concord in the late 18th century. According to an article clipping included in the lot, Barrett's Farm was a significant location in Concord for the amassing of arms and munitions that had been ordered by the Provincial Congress. When the British marched on Concord in April 1775, they searched Barrett's home (their primary destination) just hours before the famous beginning of the American Revolution," the shot heard round the world."
