FAULKNER, William. The Town. New York: Random House, 1957. 8 o. Original red cloth (few small chips at ends of spine); pictorial dust jacket (slightest soiling). Provenance : Victoria and William Fielden, Faulkner's step-daughter and son-in-law (presentation inscription; by descent to:) Victoria Johnson, daughter of the preceding; sold to: Louis Daniel Brodsky (then deaccessioned from the Brodsky-Faulkner Collection at Southeast Missouri State University). FIRST EDITION, in the first binding of red cloth, with the textual error on p. 327 and with "5/57" on the lower inner front flap of the jacket. PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY FAULKNER TO HIS STEP-DAUGHTER AND HER HUSBAND on the front free endpaper: "For Sister and Bill with love Poppy." ADDITIONALLY SIGNED BY FAULKNER on the title: "William Faulkner Rowan Oak 19 April 1960." The Town was the second of the Snopes Trilogy, coming between The Hamlet and The Mansion . Only one other inscribed copy of The Town has appeared at auction in the last thirty years: the copy inscribed to Pat & Donald Klopfer, 12 January 1959, sold Sotheby's New York, 1994. See lot 83 for the copy of Requiem for a Nun inscribed to Victoria and William Fielden. Massey 347; Peterson A47.1b.
