Provenance : Saxe Commins, Faulkner's close friend and editor at Random House (presentation inscription). FIRST EDITION, TRADE ISSUE. A VERY FINE ASSOCIATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY FAULKNER TO HIS RANDOM HOUSE EDITOR on the title: "For Saxe Bill Faulkner New York 20 September 1951" and further SIGNED "William Faulkner" beneath the first word of the title. Commins was an editor at Random House from 1933 until his death in 1958. Bennett Cerf called him "one of the great men of Random House" for his work with Theodore Dreiser, Gertrude Stein, W. H. Auden, Stephen Spender, Sinclair Lewis, James Michener, William Carlos Williams, Isak Dinesen, and, especially, Eugene O'Neill and William Faulkner. Faulkner and Commins worked together for over 20 years, from The Unvanquished to The Town . The two were extremely close friends: writing to Harold Ober a month after Saxe's death, he said "We all miss Saxe. I will have to hunt up somebody else now who will stop anybody making the Wm Faulkner story the moment I have breathed my last" (quoted in Blotner, p.653). This is the only one of Faulkner's novels adapted for the stage, appropriately perhaps since it is composed entirely of dialogue. Massey 220; Peterson A321b.1.
