"MAYBE I'LL GET RICH YET": FAULKNER WRITES TO HIS MOTHER FROM EGYPT The typed letter was sent just prior to his departure to Egypt to work on the Howard Hawks film "Land of the Pharoahs" starring Joan Collins. Prior to leaving for Egypt, Faulkner had traveled in Europe where he met a new lover, Jean Babbette Stein, in St. Moritz. Writing to his mother that he is about to depart for Egypt, Faulkner relates that "Rome is a fine city, have seen a lot here walking around -- forum, coliseum, Palatine Hill. The ruins. Vatican City. Yesterday in the rain I found the church containing Michelangelo's statue of Moses. It's beautiful. Like music. Will never forget it. Am going back today to look at it again and the Sistine Chapel with Last Supper. The city is ful of fountains. You hear water everywhere--big ones full of statuary--gods and animals in marble. All sheathed in water--horses, dolphins. Nymphs. Fauns--amazing and beautiful. Am well, busy. Mr. Hawks is going to give me a share of this picture. Maybe I'll get rich yet. I love you. Billy." Further into the trip, Faulkner writes his mother again and notes that they are "of course" behind schedule and that he may have to stay "to the bitter end" which would be 14 May. He writes: "I don't like Egypt -- have had stomach trouble ever since I got here -- ... water smells ... unpleasant, a nuisance. Do you need anything? ... Write me what you need, and how everyone is.. I love you and wish I was on your front gallery now." Having entered one of his drinking cycles again, Faulkner proved difficult on the set of Hawks's film, and when Faulkner learned of his daughter Jill's engagement and asked to return home, Hawks was happy to oblige. He left Cairo on March 29. He arrived in Paris drunk, and Else Jonsson and Monique Salomon took him to the American Hospital to recuperate. See Blotner, pages, 583-84.
