Provenance : Madame Ilsley, Jill Faulkner's college French teacher (presentation inscription). FIRST FRENCH EDITION. PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY FAULKNER TO HIS DAUGHTER'S FRENCH TEACHER on the front flyleaf: "A Madame Ilsley avec des souvenances sinceres de Jill et moi. William Faulkner." This is one of an unspecified number of review copies, designated "S.P." on the rear panel and title page, and belonged to the translator, Maurice Coindreau, presumably sent to him by the publisher. This is the copy brought by Coindreau at Faulkner's request with the intention of inscribing to Mme. Ilsley. Blotner mentions the occasion where Coindreau brought the book to Faulkner at Dorothy and Saxe Commins' house in Princeton, New Jersey, where Faulkner stayed overnight on his way to his daughter Jill's graduation from Pine Manor, in Wellesley, Massachusetts, in June, 1953. Jill had asked for a signed copy of one of her father's books for her French teacher at Pine Manor, and Faulkner had suggested a French translation of one of his books. Faulkner would give the commencement address at Jill's Pine Manor graduation ceremony. Laid-in is an autograph letter signed by Jill Faulkner, Tuesday, no year, to Madame Ilsley, discussing her summer activities, especially horseback riding. She writes that "Each time your name is heard Mama, in particular, recalls with great pleasure her brief hours with you & Mr. Ilsley. I want to thank you both for being so very kind & attentive to her that evening in the Hill's. A package is in the mail now -- a little something [presumably this inscribed book] Mama, Papa & I hope may afford you some pleasure." Petersen A6.36.
