FAULKNER, William. A Green Bough . New York: Harrison Smith and Robert Haas, 1933.
FAULKNER, William. A Green Bough . New York: Harrison Smith and Robert Haas, 1933. Small 4 o . Engraving by Lynd Ward Original green cloth (a few small stains to cover); quarter morocco slicpase. Provenance : William Faulkner (inscription on front free endpaper); Joan Williams (typed letter from her son Mathew Bowen laid-in). COPY NUMBER 1: FAULKNER'S OWN COPY, LATER GIVEN TO JOAN WILLIAMS LIMITED FIRST EDITION, number 1 of 360 copies signed by Faulkner. ADDITIONALLY INSCRIBED BY FAULKNER on the front free endpaper: "William Faulkner. Rowan Oak. 1 May 1933." With the volume is a letter from Joan Williams's son noting its history and that it was "gifted... to my mother Joan Williams during the several year period when she was living in Greenwich Village after graduating from Bard college in 1950. Using the excuse that he needed to meet with his publisher (Random House) or agent (Harold Ober), Faulkner was going to see my mother (he even painted her apartment)... I can say with near certainty that he would have given her A Green Bough in mid to late 1953. By then she had met her future husband (my father, whom she married in early 1954) and was beginning to emotionally withdraw from Faulkner. Increasingly despondent on that account, the record otherwise shows that he made two other books gifts to my mother in 1953. A Green Bough was his most significant gesture in that regard, as it was both his poetry and his personal copy. Gifting my mother the volume of poetry was also in part a matter of lessening the guilt he felt over the fact that the original hand-written manuscript of The Sound and the Fury , which he had given to her several years earlier, had been coerced away by his publisher after the Nobel Prize nomination." A Green Bough was Faulkner's second, and final, volume of poetry, after his first book, A Marble Faun . Petersen 15.1a.
