FAULKNER, William. A Fable . New York: Random House, 1954.
FAULKNER, William. A Fable . New York: Random House, 1954. 8 o . Original maroon cloth; pictorial dust jacket (a few tiny nicks at edges). Provenance : Phil Stone, lawyer from Oxford, Mississippi, close friend of William Faulkner (presentation inscription; inscription by him on front free endpaper: "Phil Stone Oxford, Mississippi June 10, 1954.") FIRST EDITION, TRADE ISSUE. AN IMPORTANT ASSOCIATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY FAULKNER TO PHIL STONE on the front free endpaper: "Phil, with love Bill Oxford, Miss 10 June 1954.." ADDITIONALLY INSCRIBED on the title: "William Faulkner, 10 June 1954." Phil Stone was one of Faulkner's closest friends and confidents from Oxford who "was uniquely fitted to serve as William Faulkner's friend and mentor. He was a compulsive talker, a man who loved to teach and tell stories. Moved by impulses toward literary creation but lacking the drive to carry them through to fruition, he could satisfy them only vicariously. He would later say of himself, 'I'm like an elaborate, intricate piece of machinery which doesn't quite work.'" (Blotner, p.44). During the teens and twenties, Phil Stone began sharing books with and encouraging the writing of his younger friend. His support extended to having the secretaries in the law office type Faulkner's early work, and to paying for vanity press publication of The Marble Faun , Faulkner's first book (see lots 33 and 34). Faulkner dedicated the three books of the Snopes Trilogy to Stone, and based characters on both Stone and his family members. The lawyer Gavin Stevens, a major character in Intruder in the Dust and Knight's Gambit, was based upon Phil Stone. Massey 39; Peterson A37.2b.
