This important and monumental work is a source of primary importancefor the history of the Portuguese conquest and administration in Asia, withrich and vivid descriptions of rituals and customs of India, China, Japan,Ethiopia and Ceylon. The scope of Asia Portuguesa is remarkable, combiningmercantile and military geographical detail and rich descriptions of nativelife. The views and maps depict Bacai, Barcalor, Cananor, Goa, Macao, Magalor,Ormuz etc. Sabin: “Though not exactly treating of America this valuable workcontains many notices of the Spanish and Portuguese colonies in America.” Avidchronicler and polyglot, Faria y Sousa lived in Madrid for most of his life inthe service of the Spanish Crown. Here he collected books, dispatches andmanuscript materials of all kinds in preparation of his chronicle of thePortuguese empire across the globe. Accordingly, Asia Portuguesa is ofsignificant historical value for the detailed list of works included in thethird volume. Lach and Van Kley: "The work came out posthumously edited bythe son who had inherited the important archive of books and manuscripts: itwas reprinted several times in Spanish and an English translation by JohnStevens was published in London in 1694-95. On his decease in 1649, Faria ySousa's significant archive of books and manuscripts returned to the custody ofhis son who prepared the present work for publication. It was republishedseveral times in Spanish and an English translation by John Stevens waspublished in London in 1694-95.
