FAR EAST AND AUSTRALASIA Album of photographs of China, Japan, Samoa, Australia and New Zealand, albumen prints, 1876-1878, 217 photographs, 3 x 26in - 86 x 106 in (8.5 x 5.5cm - 20.5 x 26.8cm) on 86 leaves, oblong folio, bound in original cloth (later rebacking, extremities rubbed). [ Together with: ] Manuscript journal by 'Fr. Gutsche' of a tour of the Far East and Australasia on S.M.S. Augusta , together with historical and topographical notes, 3 October 1876 - 4 June 1878, in German, approximately 200 pages, 8vo , in original green cloth binding (some disolouration). The photographs, a number of which are clearly commercial prints, depict a great variety of views and portraits from every point on the route of the Augusta's tour. There is an especial concentration on Japan - in particular Yokohama, Tokyo and Kobe - and its costumes and customs (including the gibetting of a criminal); but the album also includes a number of views of Sydney and Auckland, as well as portraits of Australian Aborigines, Maoris and Samoans. There are images of Egypt, Malta and Gibraltar on the return journey. The journal describes the course of the tour illustrated in the album, and includes a section of historical and statistical notes on a number of cities visited, including Sydney, Auckland, the major cities of Japan, Hong Kong, Shanghai and Singapore.
