Family group: A Second World War Arnhem casualty’s group of five awarded to Staff Sergeant R. W. West, Glider Pilot Regiment, A.A.C., who died of wounds in October 1944 1939-45 Star; Italy Star; France and Germany Star; Defence and War Medals, together with A.A.C. and Glider Pilot Regiment badges, and cloth ‘Airborne’ uniform flash, good very fine Four: Private J. West Royal Army Service Corps, late Bedfordshire Regiment, father of Staff Sergeant R. W. West, Glider Pilot Regiment 1914 Star, with clasp (8545 Pte., 1/Bedf. R); British War and Victory Medals (8545 Pte., Bedf. R.); Army L.S. & G.C., G.V.R. (M-20268 Pte., R.A.S.C.), together with Bedfordshire Regiment badge, the last officially corrected, generally very fine Three: Stoker 1 R. M. Odell, Royal Navy, believed to be an uncle of Staff Sergeant R. W. West, Glider Pilot Regiment 1914-15 Star (SS. 110581 Sto. 1, R.N.), surname ‘O’Dell’; British War and Victory Medals (SS. 110581 Sto. 1, R.N.), generally very fine or better (16) £800-1000 Footnote Richard William West a qualified glider pilot, who most probably participated in the earlier Sicily and Normandy airborne operations, served in ‘F’ Squadron, 2nd Wing of the Glider Pilot Regiment, A.A.C., at Arnhem, and died of wounds at Apeldoorn hospital on 6 October 1944 - he was originally buried in the General Cemetery at Heidehof but today he is buried in the Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery. Sold with a quantity of original documentation and photographs, the former including the recipient’s Army Council condolence slip in the name of ‘S./Sgt. R. W. West’; a fine series of letters (approximately 20) written by the recipient to his sister “Bett”, ranging in date from late 1940 to early 1944, the earlier examples sent from the ‘R.A. Mounted Band, Waterloo Barracks, Aldershot’ and the latter from assorted Glider Pilot Regiment (A.A.C.) bases; a telegram from the recipient to his mother, dated 12 December 1943 (‘Back in England. Home soon’), sent no doubt following his part in the Sicily airborne operations; a letter from Staff Sergeant J. McGeough, ‘D’ Squadron, Glider Pilot Regiment, to the recipient’s mother, dated 3 September 1945, in which he explains that he has just returned from Germany and has no certain news of the fate of her son at Arnhem (‘According to the date you gave, he probably died at Apeldoorn - I wish I could be more definite but you know what the position was like during the action ... ’); a War Office ‘Notification of death’ certificate, dated 22 March 1945; an ‘Arnhem Forces Security Fund 11th Annual Pilgrimage’ programme, dated 17 September 1956; an oil on canvas portrait of the recipient in uniform; around a dozen or so wartime photographs, including the recipient; a photograph of the recipient’s father, in civilian attire but wearing the above described group of medals, and a postcard, circa 1913, addressed to ‘Mrs. S. Odell’, thereby confirming a family tie-up to the last of the above described group of medals.
